Re-publication of cartoons

This Bulletin is current for Sunday, 05 July 2009.
The Bulletin was issued on Friday, 28 November 2008, 18:29:04, EST.

On 1 December 2008, a new book entitled "Groft Sagt" (or "Roughly Speaking ") is due to be released. The book features a number of cartoons and some may be potentially controversial.

The release of a film made by Dutch politician Geert Wilders and the publication of Danish cartoons about the Prophet Mohammed in 2006 led to protests across the Muslim world. Some of these escalated into violence, resulting in more than 100 deaths and property damage to Danish interests.

The re-publication in Danish newspapers of the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2008 led to further protests in a number of Muslim countries.

A car bomb attack in June 2008 on the Danish Embassy in Islamabad was linked to the re-publication of the cartoons.

Be aware that demonstrations and protests, even peaceful ones, can sometimes turn violent. You could be caught up in violence or attacks directed at others. If you are in an area affected by demonstrations, you should find a safe location, remain indoors and heed local advice. You should also monitor the media and local information sources for information about possible new safety or security risks.

You should be sensitive to local traditions, customs, laws and religions of the country you are visiting or living in at all times. Be aware of your actions and take care not to offend the cultural or religious beliefs of others. If you are in doubt about what is acceptable behaviour, seek local advice.
