Child Protection Training for Hotels in Bali and Fiji

Child Wise, a leading non-governmental agency that specialises in child protection issues, has been engaged by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to conduct child protection workshops with hotel managers and staff overseas. The initiative is part of the Australian Government's long-standing commitment to protect children overseas from abuse.

Child Wise delivered training in Bali from 12-14 July, 13 and 14 December 2005, and in Fiji on 19-20 June 2006 and 4-5th of April 2007.

The workshops aim to:

The workshops are based on Child Wise's Choose With Care program which aims to minimise the risk of child abuse in organisations that work with children.

Advice for Australian parents travelling or living overseas

A key element of the child protection training is the development of child safety guidelines for hotel child care services. Child Wise is providing ongoing support to assist in the development of these guidelines.

It is important that Australians travelling to or living in Bali and Fiji are aware that under this initiative participating hotels are not expected to adopt Australian standards of child care. Overseas child care centres are not bound by Australian regulations. Standards of child care overseas can be very different from those in Australia.

Parents planning to place their children in schools or child care facilities overseas are encouraged to research and satisfy themselves regarding the standards of security, care and staff training of those establishments. Parents should exercise the same precautions they take before placing children into schools or child care facilities in Australia. For additional information on how to select child care providers see Children's issues, Child Wise and the National Childcare Accreditation Council Inc.
